A deposit match bonus (or deposit bonus) tops up your first deposit by a percentage — "100% up to £25" means deposit £25 and the casino adds another £25, doubling your starting balance. It's the oldest welcome format in online gambling, and its appeal is obvious: more balance, more play, more chances.
The catch has always been that the matched money arrives as bonus funds, not cash: it must be wagered before it — or winnings from it — can be withdrawn. Under the old regime that could mean 40x or worse, which quietly gutted most matches of their value. Since 19 January 2026, UK wagering is capped at 10x, which has genuinely rehabilitated the format: a 100% match at 10x is now a reasonable deal rather than a trap. The decision between a match and a free-spins offer comes down to what you want — playing balance versus withdrawable winnings — and we set out that comparison honestly below.
A 200% match at high wagering can be worth less than a 100% match at 10x — or less than 100 wager-free spins. Judge deposit bonuses on three numbers together: the match percentage, the maximum bonus, and the wagering multiple. Never the headline alone.

The two dominant welcome formats reward different players. Match offers reward the deposit you were already comfortable making — they're a bad reason to stake more than you planned. Set a deposit limit before claiming, and if the wagering maths doesn't suit your budget, a £10 wager-free spins offer is the better home for your money.

The matched funds are bonus money and must be wagered first; your own deposited cash usually remains withdrawable, though withdrawing it before wagering completes typically forfeits the bonus. Wager-free spins offers are the format that pays cash immediately.
At the UK maximum of 10x, multiply the bonus by ten: a £25 bonus needs £250 of qualifying play. Check whether wagering applies to the bonus only or the deposit plus bonus — the terms must state it — and remember game weighting: slots usually count 100%, table games far less.
